안에서 진심으로 여러분 모두의 안녕을 빕니다.
세계의 훌륭한 과학자와 의료인들의 노력에도 불구하고 코로나바이러스의 기세는 꺾일 줄 모릅니다. 미국
내 감염자 수가 300만을 넘어 400만에 육박하는 지경에
이르러 많은 이들이 불안해 합니다. 사회적 거리두기, 마스크
착용하기, 자주 씻기 등의 우리의 노력으로 코로나바이러스의 횡포를 간간이 막아내고 있지만, 아직도 WHO (세계보건기구)는
바이러스에 대해 정확한 분석은 물론 유용한 백신조차 개발하지 못하고 있는 실정입니다. 섣부르게 정상적인
삶으로 돌아가려는 조급함과 안주감이 오히려 코로나바이러스의 두 번째 물결을 부추길지 모릅니다. 인내와
불편함을 감수하고 사회적 규범을 잘 지켜 우리 모두가 안녕하시길 진심으로 기도합니다. 저는 미사를 봉헌
할 때마다 우리 신자 가정 모두를 위해 진심으로 기도합니다.
 이런 와중에도 감사한 것은 성당의 발전을 위해 익명으로 봉헌 해 주시는 분들도 있고, 또 힘든 시기에 성당에 필요한 곳에 쓰시라며 봉헌해 주시는 분들도 계십니다.
진심으로 감사 드립니다. 해도, 해도 끝이 없을
줄 알았던 성전 보수는 Parking Lot을 고치는 일만 남았습니다.
많은 분들의 봉헌과 격려, 그리고 기도 덕에 이렇게 마칠 수 있었음에 감사의 말씀 드립니다. 많은 분들이 올해 50주년 기념 행사를 할 수 있을지 궁금해 하십니다. 아무래도 올해 기념행사는 어려울 것 같다는 것이 많은 이들과 저의 생각입니다.
코로나바이러스의 집단 감염이 우려되기 때문입니다. 또 다른 소식으로는 얼마전 교황님의 50주년 기념 강복이 도착 했습니다. 얼마나 좋은 사진이 될지 모르겠지만, 이번 소식지에 사진으로 보내 드리겠습니다. 진심으로 여러분 모두의
안녕을 빌며 이번 주는 이만 인사 드립니다. 주님의 평화와 보호가 함께 하시 길 빕니다. 아멘!
연중 제 17 주일 복음 묵상
오늘 복음에서 첫 번째 비유는 가난한 소작인이 남의 밭을 갈다가 우연히
보물단지를 발견하고 자기가 가진 것을 다 팔아 그 밭을 사는 사람의 이야기다. 사실 이스라엘에선 전쟁이
잦아 보물단지를 숨겨두고 피난하는 수가 있었다. 피난 간 사람이 죽어 돌아오지 못할 경우 보물단지는
그대로 밭에 숨겨져 있게 된다. 그런데 가난한 소작인이 남의 밭을 갈다가 우연히 보물단지를 발견한다. 그래서 그는 가진 것을 다 팔아 그 밭을 사고 결국 보물은 그 사람 소유가 된다는 말이다.
두 번째의 비유에서 좋은 진주들을 찾는 장사꾼과 같다. 좋은 진주를 발견하면 모든 것을 팔아 그 진주를 산다. 이 두 비유의
이야기는 즉 하느님 나라의 진가를 알아본 사람들은 누구나 소작인이나 장사꾼처럼 행동한다는 말씀이다.
이렇게 보물이나 진주를 발견 한 사람은 모든 것을 팔아 그 밭 혹은 진주를
산다고 한다.
더 큰 행복을 위해 더 큰 지혜를 위해 내가 가진 것을 아낌없이 팔아
투자해야 한다. 사람들에 따라 다르겠지만, 하느님나라를 위해
과감하게 팔아 버려야 할 것이 있다. 가정 안에서 남편은 남편대로 아내는 아내대로 자녀들은 자녀대로
서로를 위해 버려야 할 것이 분명 있다. 이 버림은 없어지는 것이 아니라 더 큰 것을 창출해내는 사랑이며
지혜이다. 내 것만 주장하고 살면 혼자는 행복할 수 있겠지만 함께 행복해하긴 힘들다.
가진 것을 다 판다는 의미는 자기가 가진 것이 전부가 아니라는 것을 아는
마음, 다른 사람들의 평가로 내가 평가되지 않는다는 자유로운 마음, 받은
것만큼 되돌려주겠다는 각박한 마음이 아니라 오죽하면 저러겠나 싶겠나 하며 이해 하는 큰 마음을 갖는 것이다. 이것이
하느님께서 우리에게 허락하신 풍요로움이다. 오늘 복음 말씀은 완전한 자유를 위해, 완전한 풍요를 위해 완전한 지혜로 하느님의 나라로 보여주시는 예수님의 말씀이다. 마치 제 2 독서에서의 말씀처럼
“그분의 계획에 따라 부르심을 받은 이들에게는 모든 것이 함께 작용하여 선을 이룬다는 것”이다.
우리 삶의 깊은 곳을 들여다보면, 거기에는
나눔이 있다. 힘들고 드물게 나누지만, 그것으로 행복해진다. 나눔이 있는 곳에 아름다움과 감동이 있다. 우리의 삶에서 나눔이
자취를 감추면, 세상은 살벌해 진다. 더 많이 갖고, 더 높아지고, 더 강해지기 위한 경쟁만 배우게 되는 세상에서 기쁨은
쟁취로만 얻어지는 것이 될 것이다. 이런 풍토에서는 감사할 일도, 감동할
일도, 자기 스스로의 버림으로 얻는 투자는 생각할 수도 없다. 나
한 사람 잘 살고, 나 한 사람 더 많이 갖고, 남이야 어떻든
이리저리 빵빵거리며 난폭하게 질주하는 사람들만 넘쳐날 것이다. 그것은 인간이 사는 세상이 아니다.
나눔은 하나의 암호와 같이 우리 삶의 깊은 곳에 감춰져 있다. 그 암호를 읽어내어 사랑을 실천하신 예수님처럼 우리도 그 삶을 살아야 한다.
오늘 복음은 보물 혹은 진주를 발견한 사람은 가진 것을 다 팔아 투자한다고 한다. 하느님의
나라는 우리의 이기심, 욕심, 경쟁심의 대상이던 것을 모두
팔아버릴 때 비로소 그 실체 즉 나눔이 나타나며, 사랑이 넘치는 하느님의 나라의 실체가 나타난다.

A finance magazine
prints a yearly list of the 25 highest-paid Chicago athletes. There are a lot
of zeros behind the salaries they receive. From the Bulls to the Bears to the
Hawks, Cubs, and Sox, these pro athletes representing Chicago have some pretty incredible
contracts. The figures involved, the fees paid to a player, plus the bonuses
received, are quite amazing. Can any individual really be worth so much?
Solomon did not have
an agent to negotiate his salary when God said to him, “Ask for what I should
give you.” The king quickly responded, “Give your servant therefore an
understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and
evil?” Did he undervalue himself? Should he have asked for worldly
success, popularity, health, old age, or an unlimited source of gold or silver?
Solomon asked for
wisdom, discernment, an ability to know the difference between good and evil,
to seek goodness, justice and peace, to exercise mercy and compassion, to
recognize the needy around him, to use the things that do not last by living
the values which are eternal.
True value is not to
be found in celebrity or victory, but in knowing the difference between right
and wrong, between true or false. True value is found in love and loyalty, in
compassion and mercy – these are possessions which last forever, the treasures
which are here for more than just a day. True treasures outlive passing
pleasures. They neither fail nor rot away. They are a glimpse of heaven on
earth.
Wisdom is more than
knowing a lot of things or having impressive university degrees. Being endowed
with wisdom is more than being a morally very good person. Wisdom gives an insight into what is truly important in
life, an awareness of the meaning and purpose of living, of what really matters.
This is indeed a treasure found in a field or a pearl of great price.
Solomon did not ask
just to have things, or to have obstacles in his life removed. He asked to be
able to see. A constant theme running through the Gospel is the healing of
blind people and of the ‘incurable blindness’ of those who thought they could
see. You can have 20/20 vision with your physical eyes but the eyes of your
heart can be blind to the light of God. There are lots of people like that in
the world. Physically they can see but spiritually they are blind. The true
disciple is the one who begs Jesus, “Lord, that I may see.” The one who sees is
the one who has wisdom. The one who has wisdom knows how to cope with the
situations of life whether they bring ease or difficulty, pain or joy.
This is what Solomon
asked for and this is what God gave him. “I give you a heart wise as none
before you has had and none will have after you.” And, of course, the ‘wisdom
of Solomon’ has become a classic reference for centuries.
This is the treasure
hidden in a field for which a traveler sells everything to have. This is the
fine pearl for which a merchant sells everything he owns in order to get it.
The ability to see is what opens the door to the Kingdom of God, understanding
our relationship with God, others and our world. For here there is truth, here
there is love and caring, here there is freedom and peace.
Paul the Apostle
prayed for the Ephesian community: “I keep asking that the God of our Lord
Jesus Christ…may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may
know God better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order
that you may know the hope to which God has called you, the riches of his
glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for
us who believe.” What would you answer when God enquires of you: “Ask for what
I should give you.”
