하느님의 사랑과
성령의 친교가
여러분 모두와
함께 하시기
빕니다.
코로나바이러스에서
안녕을 바라는
인사가 조금
지겨운 듯하지만, 계속 조심하고 예방에
힘쓰시기를 바랍니다. 이렇게
오래갈지 아무도
예상하지 못했지만
코로나바이러스는 우리를 비웃듯
끈질기게 우리를
괴롭힙니다. 미국에서 백신개발의
소식이 들리지만
빨라야 올해 말 혹은 내년 초에 일반인의 접종이 가능하다고 합니다. 답답하지만, 희망 안에서 여러분 모두 안녕하시길 진심으로 빕니다.
올해는
한국 순교자
시카고 성당
건립 50주년의 해입니다. 사실 이 큰
기쁨의 날에
모든 신자들과
함께 하느님께
감사드리는 미사와
더불어 축하하는
잔치를 벌리려
했으나, 코로나바이러스 집단
감염의 위험으로
올해는 하지
못할 것
같습니다. 그런 와중에서도
50주년을 위해 많은
분들이 사랑을
보내주셨습니다. 2018년부터 현재까지
약 $170,000을 봉헌해
주셨습니다. 이중에는 익명으로
봉헌해주신 분들이
많아 자세히
밝힐 수는
없습니다만, 오천 명을
먹이신 기적을
보는 것
같아 감사와
기쁨이 넘칩니다. 특별히 만 불이
넘는 봉헌은
모두 50주년으로 잡았습니다. 왜냐하면 수입금에 10%를 교구에
내야하기 때문입니다. 익명으로 봉헌해 주신
분들의 양해를
구합니다. 그 중에
올갠을 새로
구입했고, 성당의 모든
쿠션을 새로
만들었으며, 성당 페인트, 새로운 카펫공사, 50주념 미사에
필요한 성물
구입(성작, 성반, 부활 초, 성탄 전례용품) 마이크 시스템, 그리고 얼마전에 끝낸
종탑 보수
공사까지 해서
약 $110,000을 조금
넘게 사용했습니다.
앞으로 계획에 따라
지붕교체와 파킹랏
보수 공사를
하면 대부분의
큰 일들은
마치게 됩니다. 좀더 자세한 내역은
재무회의를 통해
2-3주 후에 사목편지를
통해 보고해
드리도록 하겠습니다.
어려운
시기 일수록
더 단단해
지는 교회에
대한 사랑에
진심으로 감사드립니다. 언제 만나 뵈어
함께 하느님을
찬미하고 기쁨을
나누게 될지
지금은 장담할
수 없지만, 하느님의 돌보심으로 빠른
시일 안에
여러분 모두를
만나 기쁨을
나누게 되길

옛말에 양잿물도
공짜면 큰 것으로 마신다고 했다. 살고 먹기 어려웠던 시절 동네에 잔치가 생기면 어디서 소문을 듣고
왔는지 거지들이 문 앞에 와서 음식을 동냥해간다. 인심 좋은 주인이면 거지들은 상에 놓인 음식을 공짜로
먹고 바가지에 남은 음식도 싸간다. 이렇듯 공짜는 무조건 좋다.
오늘의 제 1 독서에서 “목마른 자들아, 모두
물가로 오너라. 돈이 없는 자들도 와서 사 먹어라. 와서
돈 없이 값없이 술과 젖을 사라. 너희는 어찌하여 양식도 못 되는 것에 돈을 쓰고, 배불리지도 못하는 것에 수고를 들이느냐?” 그렇다 오늘 우리가 들은
제 1 독서의 말씀대로 공짜의 의미는 은총이다. 은총으로
베풀어진 삶이다. 같은 맥락에서 그리스도인들에게 베풀어지는 은총은 그 어떤 것도 막을 수 없다고 사도
바오로는 확신하고 있다. “나는 확신합니다. 죽음도,
삶도, 천사도, 권세도, 현재의 것도, 미래의 것도, 권능도, 저 높은 곳도, 저 깊은 곳도, 그
밖의 어떠한 피조물도 우리 주 그리스도 예수님에게서 드러난 하느님의 사랑에서 우리를 떼어 놓을 수 없습니다.” 오늘
복음에서 오천 명을 먹이신 기적을 본다. 공짜로 배부르게 먹이시는 그분의 모습이 오늘 우리가 거행하는
성체성사 안에서 공짜(은총)로 모시는
그리스도의 몸과 피를
통해 확연히 드러난다.
많은 오해의 소지가
있지만, 오늘 우리가 들은 오천 명을 먹이신 기적을 이렇게 풀어보자.
공관복음에서는 빵과 물고기의 출처가 불분명하지만, 요한복음을 보면, “여기 보리 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가진 아이가 있습니다만, 저렇게
많은 사람들에게 이것이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?”(요한 6,9) 라는
안드레아의 말로 그 빵과 물고기가 어린아이로
부터 나왔음을 밝힌다.
“많은 사람이 그들이 떠나는 것을 보고 모든 고을에서 나와
육로로 함께 달려가 그들보다 먼저 그곳에 다다랐다.” (마르
6,33) 여행을 준비하면서 꼼꼼히 챙겨 놓은 보따리가 있었지만, 안드레아가 말한 것처럼
자기가 가지고 있는 것은 나 혼자 먹기에 근근한 양이니, 이 많은 사람들 앞에서는 내 놓을 게 없다는
생각에 아무도 보따리를 풀지 못하고 있다. 그런데 꼬마 녀석 하나가 오천 명을 먹이라고 빵 다섯 개와
물고기 두 마리를 내 놓는다. 기막힐 노릇이다. 저런
바보
같은 놈. 그것으로 이 많은 사람들에게 무엇을 할 수 있을 것 같으냐?
그럼에도 불구하고 예수님께서는 하느님
나라를 선포하시면서 하느님의 나라는 나 혼자만 사는 나라가 아니고 함께 살아가는 나라임을 선포하신다. 우리가
아버지라고 부르는 하느님께서 당신의 생명을 거저 우리게 주셨으니 거저 받은 은총이 나 혼자만의 것이
아니라 우리
모두를 위한 것임을 풀어 설명하시고 더불어 이웃과 함께 기쁨과 행복을 나누는 것임을 설파하신다. 그러자
슬그머니
한 사람 씩 보따리를 풀어 자기의 것을 내놓기 시작한다. 그랬더니 모두가 배불리 먹고 남은
양이 12광주리에 가득
차게 된다.
너무 황당한 해설일까? 아니면 불경한 이해일까? 예수님의 기적을 믿지 못하는 것이 아니라
오히려 오천 명을 먹이신
기적은 지금도 일어날 수 있다는 희망이 생긴다. 작은 것들은 큰 것의 시작이다. 작은 것들이 모여 큰 것을 이루는
법이다. 그래서 가장 단순한 것은
하기 쉽지만, 실제로 실천하기가 더 어려운 것이 될 수도 있다. 가난은
나라님도
해결할 수 없는 문제라는 데 내가 한 사람에게 베푸는 작은 선행이 무슨 소용이란 말일까? 일
년에 한번 부모님께 전화 드리는 것이 과연 무슨 소용이란 말인가? 우리 애들 혹은 아내(남편)에게 이렇게 표현 하는 것이 무슨 소용이란 말인가? 나 혼자 푸는 보따리는 결국 손해일 뿐 내게 돌아오는 것은 아무것도 없다는 생각에 ‘무슨 소용이 있을까’ 따지게
된다.
이런 복잡한 생각이 단순히 베풀 수 있는 행위를 더 어렵게 만든다. 소용이 있고 없고는
우리가 생각할 문제가 아니다. 지금 이 자리에서 필요한 이웃에게 할 수 있는 조그만 일조차 부정하며 “과연 그것이 무슨 소용이 있을까?”
를 되풀이 하고 있으면 우리는
머리로만 신앙생활 하는 사람이 된다. “여기 보리 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가진 아이가 있습니다만, 저렇게 많은 사람들에게 이것이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?”라며 어른스러운
생각으로만 살아가면
사랑도 베풂도 사라진다. 사랑은 머리로만 하는 것도 아니고, 핑계는 더더욱 아니다.

Sunday of Ordinary Time – August 2, 2020
The gospel for Sunday opens with Jesus withdrawing to
a “lonely” place with his disciples. When he looks up there are thousands of
people coming over the hill to find him and ask a favor from
him. He had cured
many sick people in Capernaum; maybe Jesus will heal a family member, a friend,
or themselves from some physical illness. Finally, late in the day when people
are not hungry for a miracle, but hungry for a meal, Jesus provides food. I
would like to reflect on the
beginning of this passage when Jesus withdraws to
a quiet place.
When Jesus heard about the beheading of John the
Baptist, he went away from Capernaum in a boat to an isolated place. The trip
is about five miles by boat. Some people assume that Jesus’
immediate withdraw to a lonely place was
based on a fear that Herod would now try to imprison
Him. Let’s consider a few options.
First, Jesus is God and He never did anything based on
fear. No one, including Herod, could do
anything to Jesus that Jesus did not
allow. In the midst of the storm on the lake, Jesus tells
the apostles not to
be afraid. At another time, Jesus tells the disciples not to be afraid of
those
who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. After the resurrection Jesus
appeared to his
apostles, huddled in fear within a locked room, and told them
to stand up and stop being afraid. In the same way he told the women at the
empty tomb not to be afraid. Even when Jesus was
eventually crucified, the
Scriptures make it clear that Jesus laid down His life on His own
initiative
for no one could take it away without His consent. Jesus did not fear Herod.
We do find, however, Jesus backing away from
situations several times in order not to further
antagonize His enemies. That
happened when Jesus had returned to his hometown, Nazareth.
The people became
so angry, they sought to kill Him. Jesus simply “passed through their midst”. Jesus certainly was not afraid of them or
He would not have returned there on other occasions.
Other examples of such
occasions are where Jesus departs from irritated people to reduce
their antagonism. His departure is never out of fear.
There are some lessons for us as we strive to be like
Jesus. First, we need not fear anything
because God is sovereign and nothing
can come against us that God does not allow. God’s promise is that He will not allow
anything to come against us that is too much for us, but God will
provide a
means through it or an escape from it that we might be strengthened in our
faith.
Tough things will enter into our lives, but we are secure in the Father’s hands; there is no
need to be defeated by
fear. In the second reading, Paul the Apostle encourages the Christians
in Rome
that nothing — anguish or distress or persecution or famine or death — will
separate
us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Another reason for Jesus’ departure might simply be that He was
tired. Many times we find Jesus going off to a secluded spot after having a
time of busy ministry or before he has important
decisions to make (choosing
the apostles). Examples of that are found in Luke 6:12 or Mark 1:35, where
Jesus went off to a mountain by Himself to pray after having spent a lot of
time
ministering to people. That has also occurred in our passage this morning.
Jesus has been
very busy over the last few chapters of Matthew’s gospel teaching, preaching, and healing
people. Mark 6 specifically says that there had been “many people coming and going, and they
did
not even have time to eat.” Jesus is tired and wants to go to a secluded place
where
He can be refreshed. We all need those periods of peace and quiet in our
demanding schedules.
When we can find that restful time, don’t feel guilty, enjoy it.
The area where Jesus landed was remote from any city
and even the closet village was some
distance away. Jesus’ destination was a mountain which was even
more isolated and where
He sought to gain privacy. But he soon discovers that
some of those who were following along
the shore beat the boat to its landing
point and were waiting there when Jesus came ashore.
On Sunday I’ll talk about how Jesus handled this
interruption to his plans for some much needed relaxation time.
